The Power Of Commitment
For the last decade or more people have been infatuated with super powers. You see it everywhere in the media. From the rise of the Marvel Universe or its challenger DC, to “The Boys” on Amazon Prime. We enjoy seeing normal(ish) looking people accomplish extraordinary things.
By watching these shows we are drawn into the belief that it requires a supernatural power to do something great. (Unless on the off chance that you were adopted into a super secret underground cult that raised you to be an elite assassin and you are now using your skills to do good in this world). This is a false belief that normal people can’t make a change in today’s world.
It makes sense that most people would feel this way as we are not all billionaire playboys that can create a futuristic exo suit (like the suit that Iron Man wears) and use it to defend the world.
What is being missed in all these shows is the invisible super power. The one that every human has within them.
The power of commitment.
The Truth
The truth is that we all have a super power inside of us, commitment. To understand this super power you must first understand the meaning of it. There are two definitions of commitment.
First: the state or quality of being dedicated to a cause, activity, etc.
Second: an engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action.
Some of the synonyms would be: responsibility, obligation, duty, dedication, and devotion. These are all pretty heavy words.
The second definition is pretty interesting. An engagement or obligation that restricts freedom of action. This means that you are restricted from doing anything that is not in line with your commitment.
To break this down further, if you made a commitment to become healthy then you don’t eat McDonalds anymore, now you eat healthy and work out in the gym. If your commitment is starting a side business, then you will have to sacrifice TV, partying, and hanging out with friends for a little while. Instead, you need to be focused on building your business.
Getting back to the earlier examples of movie super heroes. Every time they seem down and out, where the villain has the upper hand, their commitment to their cause pushes them to a new level helping them solve the problem and win. You see it time and time again. Thats is how they are able to make so many sequels. Who wants to watch Fast and the Furious 10 if in the first movie Vin Diesel’s character was just arrested and thrown in jail? (To be clear, The Fast & Furious series is about super heroes, no ordinary human could ever do the things they do in those movies).
Bezos
Another quick example is Jeff Bezos.
Jeff Bezos had a great education from Princeton and had a blooming career on Wall Street. However, in 1994 he left that all behind and started Amazon. An online book store.
We are all very familiar with it today as it is known to be one of the online giants. What most people do not know is that Amazon did not make a profit for nearly 10 years.
Talk about commitment.
Only 65% of small businesses make it past 10 years according to Investopedia, let alone going 10 years with no profits.
Pitcher
Most of you may not know the story of Bruce Pitcher. He suffered some major challenges and trauma growing up. This set him on a path to becoming severely obese, topping the scales at 400 pounds.
So many times Bruce had tried to lose weight and just as many times he failed. This lead him down a dark path to where he even tried to take his own life.
One day after leaving the hospital from an attempted suicide, Bruce had a choice to make. He could keep the status quo and continue to be unhappy and lonely or he could make a change for the better. He finally decided to commit to losing the weight.
Bruce went on to be a contestant on the show Extreme Weight Loss and in a 12 month period lost over 200 pounds. To this day he has kept the weight off. He now runs his own business called Larger Than Life where he helps others lose weight and transform their lives.
Nothing changed for Bruce until he embraced his inner super power and committed to his goal.
Be Your Own Hero
In the book The 10X Rule, Grant Cardone states, “The first thing you must do to succeed is commit.” Not take action, not learn a new skill, but commit. This is the most important part to anyones success. Name the person and the achievement and it all started with this super power.
What are some things you want to achieve in your life?
It is time for you to make a commitment and become the hero in your story of life. You are no different than any of the people listed above. We all have the same 24 hours in a day and are all governed by the same laws of physics. What you do with that time is up to you.
Don’t let the fear of criticism or failure hold you back. Use your inner super power and just commit. Once you do, failure is not even an option anymore as you will be required to persistently take action that will lead to your success. One foot in front of the other. Commit no matter how hard it gets.
What Now
The problem now is that you can’t unlearn this. You now know that you have this power within you. When you truly commit to something, you must be willing to do whatever it takes to accomplish it.
Go. Commit. Use this power hidden within you and do great things with it. Start living your best life and you will accomplish all of your wildest dreams.
Cheers.
